Message Board - Pests, Weeds and Diseases: spraying moss
26 Feb 2010 by sue lacey
Hi,
does anyone know of an affective moss killer for hard surfaces.
I have previously used Qualgex in a knapsack sprayer but it comes out in bubbles and didn't soak the moss enough. What could the reason for this be?
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Sue,
This product is tried and tested at many sports venues with good success.

Hi Sue,
"Mossguard" contains iron and is for use on turf, it will stain your hard surfaces.
Qualgex and MMC Pro are basically the same. These products works best at warmer temperatures, 9degrees+. Are you using the correct water volume? a wetter will help.

I have used Qualgex, it does work but needs a high water volume and it does work much better in warm conditions. I used it prior to Xmas and the results were dissapointing compared to results in the summer.

Thank you everyone for your advice so far
Steve -
I too used it before xmas with no affect. I followed the dilution rate on the container and used a 15ltr knapsack with a medium knozzle but it came out in bubbles, do you know why this might be?
Does it have a shelf life?

Sue pm IGS on here he has a product that eats moss and then remains dormant for a while - will remain effective for at least a year - its slow to get going but totally effective - no messy brown dead moss to get rid of! If you cant find him pm me

Hi Sue.
There is a product called Award Cleanmax that is excellent for killing moss and lichen on hard surfaces. It cleans up concrete and other masonry surfaces. It comes in a 5ltr container and 1 container treats 1000m2 500ltr of water per hectare

Hi Sue,
Yes it does bubble, I was using it on a 5 a-side football hard surface with a scout pedestrian sprayer, as I turned after the first run and saw a 2m line of bubbles it was a bit
It did have an effect but didn't get down into the coarse surface and that was a lack of water volume, the result was dissapointing even allowing for that.
During the summer we used around some cemetary pathways and it was very effective, quick though laborious as 15ltrs doesnt go far.
The trick is to soak the moss and ensure that it gets right into the pad of moss otherwise you end up just scorching the surface. The moss goes a light tan colour rather than black.
Not sure about the shelf life, but will ask.
Regards
Steve
