Message Board - Natural Turf: Grass Harrows

26 Feb 2010 by korky

Has anybody ever used a grass harrow? They are used to rake out dead grass, moss etc.. They consist of 7or 8mm tines that vibrate from side to side when trailed. They have leveling effect on ground along with considerable shallow aeration.

Hi Donk thanks for reply. Is it good for levelling and standing up grass in muddy conditions or is it at its best when ground is dry?

you mean something tlike an Opico Grass Harrow..???....yeah ive got 2 sets, a 3mtr set and a 6 mtr set....they do a fabulous job as you can adjust the angle of the tines for shallow or aggressive,., dont try and harrow when the ground is wet, you,ll leave bad tyre marks, do it when the surface is drier...This is my set on the back of my JD 4600....

That's the one Ticky 21. Saw it advertised in Farmers Weekly or similar, seems it would do a job similar to a Quadraplay, no?, in the right conditions. I see you have a K-two on another thread. Would these 2 pieces of kit do all the aeration and levelling for summer pitches or rugby pitches during non playing summer and autumn?

I had a set of Opicos at my old golf club for raking out the junk from fairways. Very good kit. Don't have any here so I am doing a deal with a local farmer to come in and use his on the course, very reasonable rates and I don't have to but them.

The answer is None more black.

Hi Korky..im quite lucky as i have all those bits of kit....Opico harrows, K-two spiker, and a 8ft quadraplay.....i tend to use the opico when we have had a wet spell, and this pitches have been cut up, i wait til its dry enough and go out with them and harrow in 2 directions on a non agressive setting, to even out all the rough areas......i tend not to over use the opico as they do rip out all the trash ( which is a good thing with thatch build up) but not so good as it,ll take out some much needed grass too...for other grooming and repair work i use the quadraplay more than Opico, as it spikes harrows, (but i tend to wind them up out of work).. brush and rolls...leaving a fairly level presentable pitch...i do spike with the K-two every week...so to sum up...if you had use of or owned these pieces of machinery....you would be set up for grooming aerating and repairing works...i do have a Aeroking 2.1mtr "verti-drain" as well which i try to get my clubs to have done twice a year....funds allowing....
PS i also use the opico for some of the "end of season" work....i harrow 2 or 3 directions then hoover up with the Amazone groundkeeper......ready to overseed..

Thanks Ticky 21,you are indeed privilaged to have all that kit. We have a slitter which we use every other week or as conditions allow. I would think that the grass harrows would be useful and particularly if overseeding into an existing weak sward.

Got 5 rugby pitches to look after, still surviving the weather at the moment, hopefully with the days getting a bit longer we might get some warmth into the ground. Currently slit when pos, also have a chain harrow, but would this Opico harrow be more benificial than the chains.
Cheers Phil
