To be honest Nifty....213's are getting a bit long in the tooth.....shop about for a sensible 2130....which is the updated version, or a Hayter 324......ive seen them about for £4000 ish...

What kind of cutting units can you get wit the T324? we run a lot of them and they have only a rear roller and side skids. (Verge mowers)
Regards
Steve
Don't talk to me about Contractors Wonka, I am one myself......

Steve, im not too sure what the cylinder unit options are on a 324....but on a budget, and just for an outfield, im sure the basic ones would do a good enough job, specially if you cut 2 directions, it would look presentable ...

Steve the I cut a cricket outfield all last season with a set of Ransomes 214's with the Magna units, (tractor mounted I know but the same principle) I cut in the line of play one week and across the line of play the next, the club can't afford 2 cuts a week and the outfield looked fine, you also have to take into consideration that if it's one cut a week you may well get a better cut without the front roller, as it doesn't roll the longer grass flat first.

Ive got a 213 triple and cut outfield twice a week in different directions, works fine. But that tri king looks good.In any case, is stya with a 3 unit. used a 5 unit before and it was more of a pain, having to keep 5 units cutting the same as opposed to 3. I think narrower lines look better anyway.

Nifty,
There's a nice looking Saxon on flee bay right now, 8 years old, cricket club owned, £850. Buy it, spend up to a grand doing it up to as new and you've got a 6 foot triple and £2000 left in the bank. Spend that on weeeding / worming the outfield for the next few years.
Take a look at what the Channel Islands guy is sitting on in the home page article - if it's good enough for an international ground, then....

Where abouts are you as i know where there's a Ransomes triple and a 5 unit with cab on at very reasonable money think the triple is Highway diesel throws the grass behind.

Nifty,
What club are you at, how much cutting do you do and what servicing do you have access to?
Hibaldstow is just south of Scunny and you're welcome to come and see our Saxon to understand why I keep banging on about them for smaller clubs.
The Ransomes you're looking at looks a solid machine, but how easy is it to get at that rear cutting unit if there's a problem? The Saxon's units are all out in the open and the side units can be removed in less than 5 minutes if needed.
How well set are you to deal with issues with the hydraulics? They're mighty expensive if they go wrong compared with the belts on the Saxon (in two years since we bought it I've had to replace one belt [for about a tenner from a car spares shop]).
How good is the cut finish? Probably pretty good, but don't forget that the Saxon has 7 blades per cylinder and if you have the kosher bottom blades then they have the special toughened leading edge. If you've ever been to our ground you'll know we have trees on two sides as well as the lime on the outfield. The Saxon copes with no problems with the fallen twigs and comfortably cuts down to about 15mm.
If you've got acres and acres to cut then perhaps you do need the heftier machine, but if you've only got one outfield then I'd ask you why you want to spend so much on a mower that's designed for 40 hour a week use, rather than 3 - 4 hours a week (assuming two cuts).
For me, if you're at somewhere like Boston with all those acres, go for the Ransomes type machine. If your at a small ground, I wouldn't.

Nifty
Get a hydraulic machine if you can. Ransome very reliable, has mine second hand for 7 years, no problems at all. Far more powerfull than a belt driven, especially when its a bit wet and we dont always have the perfect weather when we have cut do we?
