Message Board - Football: End of season pitch maintenance

4 Mar 2010 by mr wood

Hi all,

yes its getting nearer that time again when the football pitch needs it maintenance done once season finishes on 15th april.

what i m needing is where i can get some grass seed and toil soil in bulk for as cheap as possible as club has limited or no funding as such even though we have been in talks for few local companies about investment.

also have a ride on mower seen better days but been doing it up over the winter and now runs and works fine and have just got an aereator and spreader for it now so can do that when the time is right also need to level off the goalmouths and reseed. is there anything else i m missing at the moment at all??

what would people reccomend doing and when is the best time to do the work as well. i m no groundsman but have learnt a lot by trial and error in recent seasons really and am enjoying it to.

David, look at the shop and companaies advertising on this site, that should be your first port of call.

Also, there are often "budget" seed mixes available from most suppliers, you just need to phone and ask if they are not listed.

David, the best thing I can think of is to work out exactly what you have available to spend.
Then ring up the various companies (including pitchcare) and - if you're really tight on money - be straight with them. They will in the main know the volumes of stuff that you really need, they also will know what you can get for your money and may 'should' be able to offer the best compromise. You might not get the best seed on the market, but if on a tight budget 3 bags of decent seed will give you better overall results than 1 bag of the best - as Bath once said to me, it was the best only 3 years back just cos it ain't the best now that doesn't mean it's crap.

Also, don't put your self down saying you've learnt by trial and error. At the end of the day that's the only way to learn - cos what works on one ground might not work on the next 90% of the time.

With regards to top soil, cheap ain't necessarily any good to you - equally though it might be. Regardless of budget, make sure you know exactly what it is you've got - get the soil samples done. What you buy MUST be compatible with what you've already got otherwise you've just lining yourself (or your replacement) up for a nightmare in the future. A few quid spent on a soil analysis is money well spent - unless you've already got the info, obviously.

Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.
