Message Board - Football: Thawing small areas

5 Mar 2010 by Brian Gibson

We have small areas of a few football pitches that are very stubborn and wont thaw out anytime soon. This is because they are in the shade of some tall trees and the sun doesn't get up too high at this time of year.
Is there any advice or tool available we could use to help mother nature along and thaw these localised areas out! The rest of the pitch area is in good condition, thawed well and has dried out in couple of days.

Hi Brian,

Unless you can go to the expense of covers and heaters, there isn't much you can do to thaw the surface out. In future if you purchased a few frost protection sheets, you could cover and peg down in areas you know will not thaw out of the sunlight and protect those areas from freezing in the first place.

You could also use straw or something similar.

Sorry, there is no magical answer

You could buy a chainsaw and take it to the offending trees.

Assuming the areas are small, put some covering over it (cheap tarp will do). Peg the covering so that it is about 3 or 4 ft off the ground, hire a space heater and get it under there. Be very very careful not to let the temperature get too high - or you'll melt the cover. You should be able to thaw out the area enough so that frost sheets can then do their job.

Failing that, as Bath says - take down the trees.

Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.

Cheers Guys,

Hopefully get more of a thaw on this week. Take some pointers for prevention next time though - another case of prevention better than cure !!!

borrow my missus...she can stand there and talk to the pitch....all the hot air she produces should thaw it in about 15 minutes......lmao

We had to think outside the box yesterday for our game last night, we had our frost covers down on the pitch since sunday, but we had a very small 1 metre strip off frozen solid pitch covering the 18yard box along the goal line.
We hired 2 heaters and then fabbed up a makeshift dome and blew warm air into them for a few hours.
Did the trick and got our game on, everybody happy. Shame we lost though!
