Message Board - Machinery: Cheaper fuel...........
5 Mar 2010 by Diggerman
I realise that i may be stating the obvious to many, but for those Groundsmen out there who, like me, are limited by the employers purse strings and willingness of the site manager to allow you to go and get it in the first place-
I was dong my weekly trip to the garage up the road today, to fill the jerry cans of diesil and petrol for my machinery. The girl at the till asked me if it was for farm or agricultural machinery. I told her i was the groundsman at the local school.
She then told me of the RED DIESIL pump that most garages have, tucked away somewhere on the forecourt!!! If customers dont ask, then garages dont tell!
I had 50 quid from the secretary's petty cash.
As a comparison, i filled my two 20 litre jerry cans with red diesil for 26:76p.
The change went in the minibus's fuel tank where i achieved a grand total of 19 litres!!!
If you dont know if your usual garage sells the red stuff, then dont be afraid to ask. Aparently, they have to cater for all types of fuel available to all types of vehicle!

Worth looking at the custom and excise website to establish whether you can use red diesel in your machinery, there was an adjustment of the law with regards to this 18 months ago.
Mostly to do with road use and whether a tractor with attatchment(s) or a dedicated mower.

i am surprised. ive never seen a garage with a red (gas-oil)..pump....ive just filled up my bulk tank @ 55p per litre....gone up from 46p last october...
on the law side...you cannot use red deisel in road going machinery unless it is specifically for agric use, we even have to run our John Deere 7530 on white deisel to haul compost, this is me compost hauling back in the autumn...

All my machinery stays onsite. Its not road legal. (somebody very wisely removed the horn and indicators to make sure of it)
Crazy prices though. Its absolutely ridiculous what we have to pay for fuel in this country!

Can we get back to the subject of rolling guys it's interesting to here your views around the country. Its obvious that we all suffer from the same problems, atmospheric complications,(lol), drinking time and of course sporting activities.

The only fuel station in my village has four pumps on the forecourt with a total of 8 nozzles. Four petrol, two road diesel, two red diesel.
Sadly I no longer have any diesel machines and I have to put road diesel in my car.
I guess that's what you get in a farming community.

You hit the nail on the head Jon, perhaps you get red at the pumps because of all the agriculture in your area. Never seen one here.
Most farmers in this area have there own tank on farm.

Around here, the garages are putting up their prices weekly, now 114p litre for petrol - crazy, French wouldnt put up with it.

Been that in my home town for weeks Barry.

Still paying 109 per litre down here at the moment. Bound to go up soon again.
To answer your question, Barry- I'm on the edge of Salisbury plain, just north of Andover.
While country garages do make their red diesil pumps more obvious, i am reliably informed that ALL garages sell it. Its some sort of governing body stipulation.

Really? Its bad though eh? No reason for it really, dont think oil prices are going up. Not that the Government minds anyway.
