Message Board - Not Turf Related: Car park drainage
6 Mar 2010 by Chris Thornton
Hello,
About 8 years ago the club I now work at decided to have the car park re-laid and to be fair it is a good job.
Except:- The committee said they could not afford to have it drained so the whole area now drains onto the outfield. It is 80 mtr x 16 mtr and in heavy rain it is like Niagara Falls emptying onto my very poorly drained outfield.
Now however there are funds available and I have asked them to install a large gully along the whole length adjacent to the O/F. We have somewhere to drain it to.
I would like to know where I can source gullies at least 6 inch wide and deeper than 6 inch if poss'.
All i have found locally are the 4 inch ones and I find Googling a nightmare. Has anyone knowledge of where I can find large gullies?? Has anyone done this type of work recently.?
The horse has bolted so now we are trying to catch it!!

Chris I don't think I have ever seen anything bigger than the 4 inch you mention. A method of dealing with it that I have seen before is to increase the number of round gullyes for the run to empty into and running into a deeper larger drainage pipe. i.e. the round gullyes placed say every 10 to 20 meters. I don't know if this worked well or not as I never saw it when it was raining?
Alternatively you coud run a french drain along the edge i.e. a open stone filled to the top drain. I know that this can have a few problewms with stone being kicked out onto areas that are mown but have found that covering it with steel mesh a useful way of containing it.
I'm sure there are some other thoughts out there to help you generate an opinion of how best to proceed your project.
Good luck

Chris just google High Capacity Channel Drainage System and have a look. They are available up to 600mm wide. If you install them between the car park and the outfield and connect to your drain your problem will be cured.

Chris, give Naylor Industries a ring (01226 790591) if they don't make them then they'll know someone who does.
If all else fails ring the Land Drainange Association (01327 263264).
Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.
