Message Board - Not Turf Related: A bit of fun!

9 Mar 2010 by Pitchcare Peter Last edited 9 Mar 2010

MSN have posted their list of the top 15 iconic British sportsmen and women on their website. It's an eclectic list to say the least. Just wondered what your thoughts were and who you would include?

Stirling Moss
Andrew (Freddie) Flintoff
Kevin Keegan
Barry McGuigan
Chrissie Wellington - yes, I had to look to!
Bobby Moore
John Lowe
Joey Dunlop
Daley Thomson
Steve Cram
Sir Robin Knox-Johnson
Jim Clark
Lloyd Honeyghan
Colin McRae
Eddie Izzard - well, it is Sport Relief week

9 Mar 2010 by paul kelsey

Might as well put Eddie the Eagle on that list.

9 Mar 2010 by barry glynn

Well MSN is American isnt it?
Moss never won a world championship, who the eff is Joey Dunlop? And John Lowe!!!! Darts is a pub game for bejeezus sakes.
Robin Farting-lightly, ex-public schoolboy who had nothing better to do.
Lloyd Honeghan? How about Lennox Lewis?

What do I do? I just cut the grass.

The late Joey Dunlop was many times champion of the Isle of Man TT.
Peter, I think you meant Robin Knox-Johnson!

Chris

You will never see a statue in honour of a committee.

Thanks Chris, I did

9 Mar 2010 by barry glynn

Thats what I mean, who was Joey Dunlop. Riding round like a hells angel isnt a sportsman, like driving a car round and round in circles shouldnt qualify either or sitting on a horse.

What do I do? I just cut the grass.

Rise above it.

Saltire.gif 9 Mar 2010 by mario

No problem with Joey but Barry Sheene and his epic tussles with Kenny Roberts and Steve Baker must be in there!

The OW31's versus the "tired" TR750 of Sheene's with Barry giving Roberts the 'V' sign when he passed him. Unforgetable!!

I know no boundaries.

Stirling Moss is fair enough............he could do with a lift right now.

Of course the grass looks good. The sun is shining.

I know I,m not perfect but I,m so close it scares me.jpg 9 Mar 2010 by Nifty Last edited 9 Mar 2010

No mention of Beefy - Sir Ian Botham , Sir Geoff Hurst , Virginia Wade and I'd have Seb Coe instead of Steve Cram ? and you would have to have Johnny Wilkinson on any list like that for obvious reasons.

The old darts - is it a sport debate surfaces again , sport , surely requires at very least a change of footwear to participate ? , Sir Stirling Moss yes never won a world championship (he came very close) but iconic in popular reference , all these years later the men in blue might still venture "Who do you think you are , Stirling Moss"?

Its got to be purrrfect

Oh no! I can see where this thread is going, its going to be another greaseballs convention!

Peter,

Barry McGuigan is Irish. First you nick the cream of our young cricketers, now you're stealing from our shallow pool of sports legends.

"Enery" Philmort?... what the bloody hell did he do??..he floored Ali!,didn't win though!..How about Calzaghe?....i'd sooner have Benn and Eubank or even Collins than "Enery"!

Avatar: Ireland 9 Mar 2010 by Collie

Mavo. If that's Steve Collins, he's bloody Irish too.

9 Mar 2010 by Pitchcare Peter

It wasn't my list

And it was about 'icons' not winners.

Our 'Enry is a good shout IMO

Graham Hill?

Or Princess Anne, cant believe they made her BBC sports winner one year for jumping over some fences on a horse without falling into a muddy ditch.

Peter i can see its not your list.
Yes Collie i was on about Steve Collins, didn,t realise the list was meant to be devoid of Irish or Welsh!.I,ve never understood the fuss over enery!true i,m too young to see him in his pomp, but 15 losses says it all!

Not sure about Peters Sir Robin Knox-Johnson being corrected by Chris, if the correction was the dropping of the "Sir" then that would be wrong because he is indeed a Knight.
Sir William Robert Patrick "Robin" Knox-Johnston, CBE, RD and bar (born 17 March 1939) is an English sailor. He was the first man to perform a single-handed non-stop circumnavigation of the globe and was the second winner of the Jules Verne Trophy (together with Sir Peter Blake). For this he was awarded with Blake the ISAF Yachtsman of the Year award. In 2006 he became at 67 the oldest yachtsman to complete a round the world solo voyage in the VELUX 5 Oceans Race.

Peter and Chris, please note the spelling of his sirname.

Quite how nobody has mentioned Michael Atherton is beyond me...

10 Mar 2010 by jlawrence

Of course, being a Yorkshireman, Sir Geoffrey Boycott should be on that list.

Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.

"Gentleman" Jim Baxter who extracted the urine from the England team at Wembley during the Scotland/England fixture in 1967.

This was England's first defence of their World Cup title, which we NEVER grow tired of hearing about up here, and having beaten them, we then became World Champions!!

I know no boundaries.

Shame on you MSN.

11 Mar 2010 by Philmort

Concise Oxford Dictionary "Icon" .....Image, Statuette, painting, Mosaic etc. of sacred personage, itself regarded as sacred.

Depends where you are coming from. If from that part of town, everyone who ever played for Man U., Liverpool, Arsenal (delete as appropriate) if you are that way inclined.

Tongue in cheek support for Bruno and Boycott as Statues, the way they performed, but the iconic status is entirely in the eye of the beholder in every sense.

Those who performed with dignity in and out of their sport are as deserving as boorish "winners" who seldom exhibited such characteristics, I feel.

Hence I would include the gutsy, skilful but cuts prone 'Enery (not many defeats on his backside other than on doctors' orders between rounds) alongside Bobby Moore, Steve Redgrave, Seb Coe, David Gower, Mary Rand, Mary Peters, Virginia Wade et al.

As a lasting image, which is in the spirit of the 'Icon' thing, Henry Cooper will always be there for me.

11 Mar 2010 by Diggerman Last edited 11 Mar 2010

Well in that case, for men that performed with pride and passion, and i mean both on AND of the field of play, you have to add Alan Shearer and Stuart Pearce to that list. (or does that just mean the press havent crucified them yet like they do these days with all our sports stars and "icons" ???)

11 Mar 2010 by Grassman2011

On and Off the field must be JT AND AC. Botham and Flintoff have done pretty well. Gower good on the ground and in the air. Geoff Hurst still the only one to hit three. Maradona good at cheating. Gaza brilliant drunk. Eddie the Eagle for at least trying. Gatting for taking it on the chin, well full in face really and the recently departed Bobby Robson for his pride to be everything English.

11 Mar 2010 by paul kelsey

Very good bath its just half of your list took performance enhancing smokes or powder or are p**s heads

Renault 12 Mar 2010 by Mike

Steve Backley... now there's a call! Attended one of his Javelin coaching workshops a few years ago - top bloke.

A honourable mention must also go to Ken Buchanan - i'm sure Mario will back me up on that one!!

Also like to make a point about Nigel Mansell - he is a past captain and president of the golf course where I used to work, still played fairly regularly during my time there - what I will say is this... there is a name for people like him, and it ain't exactly repeatable!

Mike

They were all very good though Paul. I must try the smokes and the powder. Can vouch for the beer, well lager anyway.

DAVID BECKHAM!!!!!!!!!!

"He not busy being born is busy dying"

13 Mar 2010 by barry glynn

David Beckham is the most overated British player of the last 2 decades. He takes a decent corner and free kick, has/had the pace of a snail and when he did try and hold on the the ball, spent most of the time going sideways.
Plus he married someone with the IQ of an pebble and the singing voice of strangulated mouse.

What do I do? I just cut the grass.

14 Mar 2010 by vid

Obviously from the original list they dont have to be alive so I cant believe the great man is not there + a few others Grace, Perry, Matthews, Best, Pigott, Chichester to name a few

14 Mar 2010 by barry glynn

Was it my imagination or were all the wrestlers on World of Sport at least 45 years of age!
