Message Board - Natural Turf: levelling the playing surface

11 Mar 2010 by marcuscoates

I presume I might not be the only one asking this question, but due to such a bad winter my rugby pitches are in quite a state. Mainly with cut up deeply footed areas. My budget won't allow for lots of top dressing and I don't want to roll the surface as this just further compacts the ground. I do have or can get access to chain harrows would these be the best solution to try and restore some norm to what is now a very bumpy or rutted surface?

Your on the right lines. The usual caveat here is 'when conditions allow'. You will be the best person to know if the surface is dry enough to get machinery on. I have successfully used chain harrows at our place for years, both rugby and soccer pitches. Use on the smooth side with the 'spikes' facing the sky. As they are towed, the links tend to sit up and create a decent levelling tool. Don't be put off by the apparent carnage at first, as it drys and the grass sits up, you will have a very acceptable playing surface. If you have time try and divot the worst areas beforehand. Good luck.

if chain harrows are at your disposal.. they are better than nothing, but some of us are fortunate enough to have spring tine harrows, mine are Opico Grass Harrows, and i have used them this week to harrow some pretty badly carved up football pitches...i do this in two directions, and they pull about the ground perfectly, i then leave to dry, and then use my roller (empty) to tidy the surface.......jobs a good un...

Unless you can afford to top dress. The above method is the best alternative...
