Message Board - Irrigation: What hose?

14 Mar 2010 by jontaylor

Mystery theft of the winter.
I went to the container to get the hose to ballast the roller.
No hose.
Checked all other places on ground and all club members and contacts. Still no hose.
The container's been locked all winter and nothing else looks to have gone. The hose was old and bog-standard domestic stuff. It wasn't even on a real - just hung on a couple of hooks on the container wall (clue here! one of the hooks was on the floor??)
So, apart from trying to work out how 80m of hose got out of a locked container and why, I also need to work out what to replace it with.
19mm appears a better choice than 12mm as I'll get better flow. But, should I buy Tricoflex at twice the price of everything else or not??
Is Tricoflex worth it - especially with a mystery hose thief around??

Jon. 19mm Tricoflex every time. 25mm even better on long runs , but expensive. Huge difference in flow and is durable.

jon, if you would like prices on either 19mm or 25mm tricoflex, please contact us.

Jon tricoflex is available from the pitchcare shop. They list all sizes and lengths. (Under irigation)

What is your water supply? Domestic type supply will not warrant 25mm tricoflex.

25mm pipe will also be quite heavy to carry about. I manage very well with 19mm tricoflex.

I use 19mm Tricoflex cut into 25 metre lengths with Geeka fittings attached to make up to the desired length.

I know no boundaries.

I took the cheap option last year (foolishly) and bought some hose that wasn't tricoflex. I spent the rest of the year cursing myself and the kinks in the hose. I'm getting rid and buying tricoflex this year.

Buy cheap buy twice.

Agree it's on the PC shop. Trouble is, at 50% more for the hose and double the postage charges of other UK based internet suppliers.
I think I can persuade the treasurer to stretch to Tricoflex - but only if I find best prices.

The thing is, the longer the run, particularly when going from a tap on the pavillion to the square there are massive friction losses and the flow can be very low. The larger diameter the hose the less the friction losses and the greater the flow. On a 50 metre length of 19mm hose running off our irrigation main at 120 psi the flow is greatly reduced compared to a 25 metre run. If there is 50psi at the tap there will also be 50psi at the end of the hose on level ground. It is the flow that is reduced by the water having to move quickly along the hose. Bigger hose, less speed for the same volume, less friction.

Bigger arms and shoulders needed to carry it around as well Chris.

you could always put a water pump in your water feed to the tap. this dose not interfear with normal water preasure whe pump is turned off. It works this way for me.

MMnnnn, not sure that's legal Leon. There has to be an air gap in between the pump and the mains. ie: the mains has to drop into an open vented tank before it can be pumped to prevent the risk of siphoning.

Bath, the weight is certainly a problem I will admit.

Chris you are absolutely right...ive just bought some ordinary yellow Hozelok pipe with fittings, and on the tap fitting is a red collar, this is an anti syphon device.....

It does depend on your local water company. My local one insists on an 18" air gap and does not accept anti syphon valves.

Ive got 2 X 25metres 19mm tricoflex and 2 carriers with wheels. The carrrier allow me to keep the hose safely in a container and save me hours of time trying to pull them about, money well spent. So was the money spent putting a water tap just by the side of the square.

What do I do? I just cut the grass.
