Message Board - Golf: marking out fairways

24 Mar 2010 by john murphy

Hello fellas,
just starting to mark out our fairways and I am looking for any helpful tips (distances, max-min widths etc).
Also I remember seeing pictures from old scottish golf courses where on a long par five the fairway was split in two with semi rough in between is this still in practice?
any help appriciated thanks.
John

hi john...

rule of thumb is that at the landing zones prefared widths are between 25-30mtrs. as for shaping out well that depends on your landscape, your machine width, the time u have to spare and other different factors.
My own fairways were shaped out myself self and over the years i have tweeked them year on year till i was happy with them.
Other than that john a proffesional designer will come in for a small fee and he will cut then out for you,

Hi John

There is a good explanation of contour mowing and fairway setup considerations in this book.

The link should take you to the pages but if it doesn't, pages 114 - 115 is where the information is.

Best of luck with it.

A few small tips John.
Make them sweep and flow around specimen trees, bunkers and contour moundings. The widest areas are generally around the landing area. Make the sweeping arcs large, never small as from a distance the small arcs do not look natural. A good way of experimenting is to shape them out when there is a heavy dew. Use a golf cart or something similar and drive around what you would like to be the fairway edge leaving wheel marks in the dew. If you don't like what you see it will be gone as soon as the sun comes up, if you do like it....... jump on your fairway mower and get shaping!

Then as Brian indicated, it's then a matter of sweeking them to you get it right.
