We are paid a 40 hour week every week, but vary our working week according to seasons. As a rough guide we work 9 hr days from March to October inclusive, 7 hr days November and March and 6 hr days December, January and February. The 6 and 7 hr days we only have one half hour break and the 9 hr days we have two half hour breaks.
This means that every day of the year, there is enough daylight hours to play 9 holes or anything else you might want to do outside before night sets in. Our start times are as follows:
7 x months @ 9 hr days - 06:00 - 15:30 ( one half hour break paid and one unpaid).
2 x months @ 7 hr days - either 06:30 - 13:30 or 07:00 - 14:00 (paid half hour break).
3 x months @ 6 hr days - 07:00 - 13:00 (paid half break).
My staff are very happy with this set-up. Since they are motivated by keeping busy all year round. They hated the slow days of winter, especially when the weather prevented work out on the course. Staff reductions meant I had to go this route, but if we were fortunate to get that member of staff back, I don't think any of my staff would want to revert back to the old system. I certainly wouldn't because I value those daylight hours in the winter for my own activities.

Hi Ken,
Looks like a good system, do you have any issues with annual leave? i.e. taking a day off in the winter will get you 6 hours against 9 in the summer.

Hi Steve,
Staff can take 2 weeks holiday between April and September and 2 weeks in the winter. It's all swings & roundabouts.
Starting this system in the spring means that the guy's commit to it because they are doing 9 hours work for 8 hours pay. They then benifit through the next winter.
