Hi all, i have recently taken over a course and have a problem with some new greens one in particular. They are of 70/30 usga greens two have grown in but one has not rooted you can still lift the turf and they were laid in September but this particular one is rooting sidewards i know it possibly needs redoing but was just wondering if it could be the rootzone mix thanks.

Why not take a sample of the rootzone from each green and have it tested? If it is comparable to the other greens, at least you'll know it is not the rootzone which is causing the problem.
If it is the rootzone, then it is either down to the supplier of the rootzone or the contractor to sort out the problem.

Hi Troy,
As Ken states firstly you should get the rootzone material tested. It is best to take your own samples and send them off to a USGA accredited testing laboratory. I have used ETL in the past and found them excellent. It is important that you carry this out personally and don't rely on Information supplied by the company of whom you bought it from,as at least this way you know it is completely specific to the problem green and totally independent for your own piece of mind.
Once a particle size distribution test has been carried out it should allow you to determine if the construction material falls into USGA guidlines and if there are problems with it's particle size distribution. Which in turn may lead to poor performance.
Out of interest, you say that a few greens reconstructions were carried out in the overall project. Was this green completed towards the end of the project? I also take it new turf grown on a compatible rootzone was installed?
It doesn't sound the best situation to be walking into after recently taking over. Hopefully you can get it rectified soon as I appreciate your members will be itching to get playing on their new greens.
Best of luck with it

Hi Dave,
three greens were built to USGA spec but they have had problems since they were built 2 years ago, the previous head redid them last September but i took a square out and there seems to be a layer of about 2 inch of thatch so i'm gonna tine and then topdress to try and get through it. It dosen't help that he went out and scalped them before he went but i will take a sample and send it off thanks for replying. troy.
