Message Board - Football: Horse Manure
26 Apr 2010 by Simon Glanfield
Im sure ive read on here over the last few weeks about putting natural products (horse manure)on your pitches etc?
Is this something that many people do?
I have a friend who stables horses so have access to it, and being in devon never to far from a farm for cow manure but dont really know what i have to do and when to do it, is this part of a pre season programme.
Would be great to hear peoples thoughts on the subject pros and cons
The pitches i worked on are clay based if that makes any difference
Thanks for any replies

Can be very good for a specific purpose. A little while back I looked at a pitch that we could barely scratch with a tractor mounted aerator. A few applications of horse manure later, at the right time got the worms interested, which in turn, transformed the pitch quite remarkably.

Any organic product will be of benefit. A word of caution though, be sure the horse manure is well rotted and at leat two years old. Otherwise there is potential to apply ecolli bacteria to your pitch.

Just to add to Ken's response, the other option is to introduce worms (red wigglers) to the manure pile - there is oodles of information about how to do this on the net. I have been running some trials with this of late with some remarkable results, especially where seed germination is concerned. There is a section on the ohio state university website (one of the worlds leading authorities on vermiculture) about the use of vermicompost, much of which is horse manure based, and it makes for very interesting reading.
