Message Board - Natural Turf: DNA Use In Sportsturf
28 Apr 2010 by Ian Scott
Hi folks,
Im looking for some help regarding the following question.
How could extracted DNA be used in sportsturf? Basically it could be forensically or to genetically improve plants.
I have some ideas but not too sure and this area of study is alien to me!!
thanks for any help.

Thanks for those who have sent PM's.
Any further information is welcome :)
I was thinking along the lines of using DNA extraction to maybe find cures for turf diseases etc?
Thanks
Ian

Hi Ian
How about trawling through Science Direct with your institute login?
I know for sure you will find thousands of papers on Biotechnology, whether that be the use of molecular markers, tissue or cell culture in turfgrass breeding improvement programmes.
You may find some of the papers on Endophytes interesting in relation to dollar spot supression in certain cultivars of Tall Fescue, Rye grass and some fine fescue species.
Good luck

Hi Ian
Mainly gene ID to identify different cultivars with techniques such as electrophorensis. Various biotech approaches can be usefull - Rutgers University in the states have active programms in this broad area - if the researchers truly focus on important stress mechanisms of the most tolerent ecotypes. Look at some work with genetic markers and genetic improvement .
I advise, to investigate any current work and then to speculate what may be of use. The net is the quickest and easiest first method of exploration

I forgot to mention - one thing I looked at in the past had been DNA sequencing, this is occuring more and more as I am seeing so many different bio types around.
