Get ready Minormorris64 you'll soon be explaining why the square is playable but the outfield is soaking.
Players often expect covers to be the be all and end all of getting games on. Yet another set of expectations for you to manage.
IMO covers rarely allow games to be played which otherwise wouldn't, what they do do is allow a more consistent standard of tracks regardless of the prevailing conditions.
ADDED:
Been raining here since 6am, covers have kept the track dry so it should be similar to if it hadn't rained - assuming it actually stops raining at some point.
Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.

Jon, I don't think I'll be getting much grief on that front today.(2nd XI)
Thats part of the yard at work out of my office window, still chucking it down now, liquid lunch I think, although we (1st XI) are playing our most local rivals ,12 miles away and they usually make us travel just to have an argument about whether to play or not, the latest start we have had against them so far is 4.30pm we got there at 1.30 and they hadn't even matked the pitch out, for a 2pm start.
I believe the weather in wsm has been lovely this week

Covers on at mine track fine square playable, it just won't stop bloody raining, been dry all week as well, it was lovely on the ground yesterday, it's so frustrating when it's been nice all week and then it rains on the Saturday and to top it all they are bottom and been hammered by everybody. I have to say that however much I love playing and watching Cricket, but it's a s**t game in s**t weather and as I get older the criteria for s**t weather gets lower and lower.

Went to the ground today at 1000 and the covers had been on all night and it had rained all night,i think!
Rain in the air and light rain when covers came off at 1245.
Dry ish for 4 overs then rained for the next 30 overs till RSP!!!
Had tea then our lot were given 28 overs to score 136.
Covers off for 10 overs then covers on. Then after a longish day game abandoned so I moved the bloody covers onto Monday's pitch!
Then was told by a supercilious prick who resides in our cricket committee and does a bit of umpiring (But never at home) that I mark the 5 foot marks wrongly. Nothing like "Must have been a ball ache for you today, trying to get the game finished and ending up with just 4 points" No, had to come from his abandoned game to have a walk round and find a small fault.
What with covers, wet weekends and knobs like him I'll be glad to finish this winter and spend Saturdays carp fishing!!!

What was 'wrong' with your 5 foot marks unless they weren't 5 feet of course?
Presentation is the name of the game.

No effer ever uses the marks anyway. But remember Chris, one prick doesnt make big hole, just tell him to eff off.
What do I do? I just cut the grass.

I put a mark on the edge of the pitch about 3 inch long running along the pitch as opposed to across.
I saw this on T V (where else!) and liked it so will continue.
As it happened the marks yesterday were 6 ft 6 in from the crease. Put on by a work exp' lad on Friday when i was proper poorly.
The ump's were present when I at last got the covers off 10 Min's before play. "What the eff is this " I exclaimed and offered to alter them. "It'll be OK" they said.
Nuff said.
Thing is I have been putting the marks on like this for over 70 games now and not received one comment! Nuff said again eh

Chris, frustrating Saturday all round. 2 miles down the road from you with Bare, Westgate and Torrisholme, it was an almost amusing on off, on off shuffle over 3 grounds. With three adjoining matches everybody was watching everybody else's decision. We stayed on for 26 overs (which constituted a match started), then came off, had tea then finished at 165 odd for 6 off 36 overs. In similar conditions the oppo started, lost two early wickets and as the drizzle thickened slightly, bellowed to the umps who caved in and took everyone off. End of game after a very long wait in jumper dampening fog but not rain. Hmm.
If someone had pointed out to me at 7.00pm when I had trench foot and the game could have been completed either way, that my danger area marks may be slightly different, then I might have asked them to oil the joints on my dragmat individually with a 1/4" paintbrush before passing further comment. What a fu++in+ tosser. Question? Has he 'been on a course' ? Thought so. :-)

Chris, perhaps you'd like to ask the prick exactly how the 5ft marks should be made and EXACTLY where said explanation is laid down in the laws of cricket.
I had a discussion once with an umpire about these markings (as I've seen many different ways of doing them) and was told there is NO defined correct way. He told me so long as they are there and it's obvious where they are then that's fine.
Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.

When we had finally done for the day someone said "The thirds are still playing at Bare"
Today's track did not see a cover till 5 pm Saturday and a such is still damp and a bit green. Got the "Dark Side" crawling over Greyhound Bridge today. With all the attendant bad blood and foul language from them I intend to go away for a couple of hours on an errand. If the covers are needed I wont be around.
The ump in question is well known and has been on umps courses, of course but not diplomacy courses, of course.
Turning ones wrist through 90 degrees when applying the danger mark would be easy but I wont do it I tell you, I wont do it!!!!!!!! LOL

I bet the ump in question is the type to put his socks in neat lines and iron his underpants

Chris, I'm not going to enter the Lancaster/Morecambe debate but I do know several of of chaps were down to watch. The traffic was flowing freely over Greyhound bridge and there was no drizzle so presumably it was game on :-) .

Why not just mark em parallel to the popping crease?
The ciderman rolls
1 Jun 2010 by Chris Thornton
Yes Jon I will. I have spoke to a couple of umpires. They came out whilst I was marking up and said that across was better than along. So, I ended up with both varieties at each end.
Just get p.....off with people who can only find fault.
So I'll "play a let" and revert to how I used to do it.

I too use an 'L'

As do i. The L also marks the width of the pitch.
2 Jun 2010 by Chris Thornton
Now there is a thought. One element of the"L" to delineate the edge of the pitch , 10 ft, and one for the 5 ft mark. Thank you. SORTED.
I love this M B

I do my one line 'inline' with the width of the crease using string as pointed out by 'bath'

I use an inverted L. don't know why but I've always done it that way.
Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.
