Message Board - Natural Turf: Bed Rock

8 Jun 2010 by green fingers

I have always had a waterlogged area on my rugby pitch. I have dug down and came to shingle and solid rock at only 18inches. The ground is low lying and it has been a cut and filled pitch when buit 70 years ago. I got a friend in who works in sportsturf. Is there anything I can do to crack through the rock to help drainage?

We have the same situation down our pitch according to a local famous groundsman! He told us we should get the dynamate man in to break up the rock below! Surely this is not an option for health and safety. also i would image the after effects could be unpredicable. If it was proven to work i would be interested!

proven ?
it's how they remove rock faces in mines, so I suppose you could say it's proven.

one question would be how big is this rock. if it goes down for 100's or 1000's of meters then you can do whatever you want - it won't make the blindest bit of difference.
obviously you won't get the depth of rock with our 'normal' core samplers - you need to get some serious drilling kit in. if it's a serious problem then you need to get speaking with a geologist not a groundsman.

Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.

I reakon that with 18 inches of growing medium that you should ignore the rock and look for an easier solution.
