Message Board - Golf: programs

After getting back into Greenkeeping in the last few months after a spell of a few years out, i was shocked at the what it had happened, normal Greenkeeping practices had been taken over by hard sales talk of how a soil test could solve all your problems and a program which involved spraying chemicals at different stages through the season. What has happened to the old theory's of if your turf looks healthy leave it alone and simple things of aeration more and feed little and often when the turf needs it not when someone comes in and says it needs this now according to the soil test come on people get back to basics you know it makes sense.

This comes back to everything I have said on here before with this sort of thing - about basing nutritional requirements on a very subjective, technicaly flawed system that only the true believers and salesman can interpret what the numbers actualy mean.

As with soil testing, PH etc or anything else in turf and soils, don't use anything in ISOLATION but only as a guide as producing turf for sport is far more complex than looking purely at numbers ie poa, compaction etc.

In turf there are so many widespread parametres to take into consideration such as different soils, grasses, micro climate, maintenance etc so it cannot be a case of 'one size fits all'.

In my many years in research, I have looked at more stuff than probably anyone else as an independent researcher and a lot can be treated as garbage - I feel in a lot of ways, turf has lost it's way due to commercialism and the gullability of some turf practitioners.
