Message Board - Cricket: Surrey Loam

Need some advice on top dressing for end of season. We've been using Rigby taylor for the last few years but last years loam was very dark in colour almost blue black in colour which looked terrible on our square. Don't want to risk that again. Seen GardenClever advertising a ton bag for 117pounds. Has anybody used them or any other supplier suggestions.

Erm, you seem to be under the mishaprehension that all Surrey loam is the same - it isn't.
You need to find out what is IN YOUR SQUARE BEFORE you even think about buying loam.
Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.

I use Surrey Loam GOSTD 125 and yes, it's quite a dark loam but it dries into a nice white-ish colour.

Pasty, before you make any changes to your loam supplier, please talk to your county pitch advisor first. Most important.

Echo Bath's (Gordon) comments.
before even considering a loam change get a soil analysis test done including partical size distribution, binding strength (motty test) you can do yourself and shrinkage rate.
Only ever purchase a proprietory cricket loam from an approved source. Know nothing of Garden clever and doubt if they are a professional supplier of cricket loams.
Your local PA is the man for assisting in all this.
Rigby Taylor are a nationwide well respected supplier and it's dubious they sold you some duff stuff.
Some people are like Slinky's, totally useless but amusing if you push them down the stairs

I took delivery of a Ton of Surrey Loam last week from RT.
It looks excellent.
It needs to be compatible really with what you have been using and what the square is made up of, though personally I just put down the surrey loam that I buy onto the surrey loam square and have no problems at all.

Steve
Don't talk to me about Contractors Wonka, I am one myself......

unless you've already got hurstridge on there I'd stay away from it.
I've about 1.5 pallets of the stuff in my shed. imo it's only just got more binding strength than sand. I use it for filling holes in the outfield - it's going no where near any of my squares.
Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.

I heard a rumour that RT ran out of loam from their usual sources and so got a quick delivery in from GOSTD/Surrey Loams Ltd last year. If this is true they certainly haven't sold a duff product, however, GOSTD loam is very different from 'surrey' loam and in my opinion they have done a disservice to their customers by doing this.
The problem is that there are no effective controls in the cricket loam supply industry and until there are, customers will be at risk of using incompatible loams from one year to the next.

"You always take a risk if you buy a product that is packaged in a bag other than the manufactures own".
This I was told a few years ago, when trying to buy Ongar and others were selling Essex Loam, which they claimed to be the same product.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I think I'll go back to RT and see what they have to say. There's wasn't anything wrong with what they delivered other than the colour but we all want our squares to look good dont we.
