Take a look at this article on end repairs.
As for the Trott syndrome, a piece of 4x2 tends to work well - if wrapped around the batsman's head.
I did mention to some of our guys (just jokingly but they didn't know that) if they started doing marks like that then I'll stop repairing batsmen's marks. Can't say I've had any problems beyond the normal repairs.
Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.

The Juniors are by far the worst at creating "Trott Trenches"
If your surface is hard and dry , try applying PVA behind the 5 foot marks on Friday evenings, I do.
Half a pint of it mixed in 2 gallon of water applied with course rosed watering can.
It helps. But, fine weather is required!!!!!!!!!

Just to second Chris, You DO need to have it dry before glueing - otherwise you're just sealing in the moisture which can't be a good idea.
I don't have a great problem fixing up ends after a match - it really doesn't take that long regardless of how big the holes are.
Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.
