Got a match against them on weds, Thing that slightly irks me is that they pay nothing towards the day. Free lunch etc, use of ground. Cost the the club not cheap. And for the club to play whom? Just a bunch of club cricketers from around the area.
What do I do? I just cut the grass.

Don't play them then.
Some people are like Slinky's, totally useless but amusing if you push them down the stairs
Barry,
If you think the MCC is "just a bunch of club cricketers from around the area" then you are sadly mistaken and dont appraicioate the role of the MCC is the history of the game or its role today. I suggest that a bit of research on your part might prove illuminating. Who for example is covering the costs of staging the neutral Tests between Pakistan and Austrailia? A great example of the modern MCC.
It should be a honour to host a club of such great traditions and if you club dont want to there will be plenty who will!

Barry,
You'll find that they are a bunch of freeloaders who will do nothing for your club as you suspect.
Cricket has been held back for far too long by these silly, stripey jacket wearing clowns imo.
I don't know what agenda philipfish has but although the MCC can put out strong teams, for the most part they're made up of unimpressive journeymen and 'guests'.
Take a stand and tell them to bog off.
Olaf
To explain, I didnt fix the game up.
Phillpfish, excuse me but you are talking out of your backside.
I am fully aware of the history of our great game. Your example though of the great deed of the MCC covering the costs of the Pakistani/Aus games actually proves my point! They can put money into Test matches that not many British people want to watch( look at the attendance figures) but expect not to pay a penny for playing an all day game on a lovely ground.
And you are completely wrong about the players that will be making up the team, I have asked the MCC match manager and that is exactly who will be playing.
Just a free game for boys in the know.
I would never, personally, expect to play at a ground in a friendly and not pay a penny and that has nothing to do with respecting the history of the game.
This is just my view you understand and not the clubs.
What do I do? I just cut the grass.
Barry, what about other teams that play at your ground? are they expected to make a contribution?
That is the whole point isnt it, when you visit another ground then you are being hosted / sponsored by the home team, in terms of catering etc.
At my last job, the visiting team never paid anything towards the cost of the fixture, that was covered 100% by the home side through fees etc as all home games were ( some were higher profile than others, and were treated accordingly) yes, there are some touring sides that dont " have " a home ground so cant " return" the favour, but then these fixtures tend to be more high profile / historical fitures rather than anything else.
My club are playing an MCC team next week as part of our 150th Anniversary celebrations.
I think it is about what you put into the day - a bar, BBQ, refreshments, raffle can surely be used to try and cover your outlay?
The fact that the MCC are in town shoudl provoke interest and therefore income?
If not, I am not sure why you are playing them!
Barry
As the fixture secretary did you arrange the fixture?
Phil
we played the mcc yesterday as part of our 150th year celebrations and to a man everybody connected to the club
had a great day,we happily provided lunch and tea.
a lot of effort was made to make the ground look as good as possible.i hired a roller !!.
mcc provide a new ball for each innings one umpire and a scorer.
a lot of people came to watch, not just ex players.
we had a raffle and bar and raised a considerable amount of funds.
we also knew some of the players who played for mcc,our groundsman is also a member.
have a great day.
Neil
Any side that visits on a one off is expected to pay something, why not?
We hosted a CCC match the other year and they did, why should the MCC be any different?
Anyway, as I said, its a personal view.
Phil, no I did not arrange the fixture. Someone took over from me after 10 years last November, only to quit in March (no surprise, he has had more clubs than Jack Nicklaus)and left the club and me in the lurch. He had made a right mess of the fixtures and left me to sort it out.
Ian, read my posts.
What do I do? I just cut the grass.
I'm confused.
If we accept a fixture with a visiting (touring of whatever) team then they aren't expected to contribute anything. I've never played cricket at any club where touring sides contribute. league games etc the opposition pay towards teas as we do when playing away but never touring teams.
Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.
Is paying a fee towards catering / etc at as an away fixture / team an a accepted practice in cricket circles??
Just seems very odd to me.
When are cricketers going to realize they dont pay enough money to play their beloved sport. Those same players will think nothing to shelling out 60 to 70 quid for a golf day but when it comes to cricket that seems a totally different matter! As a result most of you guys come on here complaining about lack of funds , grounds closing etc. As someone who plays cricket, golf and prepares pitches look how much time we spent on our grounds only for the club members to pay a pittance ! Of course there needs to be a balance , those who cannot afford it , youngsters etc but the gap beween paying to play cricket and other sports is huge and all the time you accept that you will ensure your ground struggles.
yes all good points antony...i have held all positions from captain to chairman (but not treasurer)and its about people who do and those who don't and never enough of the former.
we kick off in 1hr against touring team from kent, last week a team from essex,we probably play 8-10 touring teams in a season, groundsman goes crazy but these games are good for getting some young uns and some old uns who might not play to many matches a chance.
tourists provide the match balls and pay half of the tea cost as well as spending a few quid in the bar.long may it last !!
3 weeks to go to our tour to dorset
Jon
I have never played a side that has hosted us on tour and NOT paid them for tea and spend money in the bar, that is the least you can do.In fact when we played Uphill Castle(over the road from you I believe on tour) for 2 years, we gave them a lot more than half the cost, the tea being as good as it was.
Anyway, the MCC are not a touring side.
Neil
Yes it is an accepted practice to pay half the tea costs. In the Surrey championship now however, the away side does not pay because all matches are reciprocal on a home and away basis.
But all other sunday, friendly cricket is is accepted that you pay half the tea costs, about £40 these days.
What do I do? I just cut the grass.
Surely the clubs committee agreed to the fixture and the MCC give a list of expectations the choice should have been made early no point moaning now. Ian
Can you just is the longest sentence in the world !!!!!!!
Ian
It should have worked like that but it didnt. Look at my earlier post, bloke who was Fix.Sec just went and did it, told no one. as he did with many other things on fixtures and screwed it up.Mainly cos he was trying weedle a game for himself I think.
Anyway, my whole point is just my feelings about them freeloading, not the clubs point of view.
I just dont see why a bunch of club cricketers ( cos thats all they are) should expect to rock up and have lunch, tea etc and not pay a penny. I wouldnt.
What do I do? I just cut the grass.
True we have a few around here one who promised us a grand gesture so we where waiting for this marvelous donation it was for 15 pounds what an insult and as fixture secretary i got rid of them. How ever on 200th birthday we had the MCC and it was a real treat spoken of 14 years later.
We have the MCC play us at work and they always provide both match balls which is something and of course no one pays the school for any food etc.
Can you just is the longest sentence in the world !!!!!!!
Well, Ill tell all honestly after tomorrow.
2 balls! Wow! Indian were they?
Anyway, as long as the guys enjoy the game.
All day friendlies are a waste of time in my book, could play the same number of overs and start at 1 pm
What do I do? I just cut the grass.
Now youve hit the nail on the head. We had one started at 11.30 away team got 304 in 43 overs our 1st got 305 for 5 in 38 at it finished at 6.45 seems a long day. The balls where dukes finest. Ian
Can you just is the longest sentence in the world !!!!!!!
Our 1st x1 league games start at 11,30 but they have to bowl 120 overs but it goes on for ever.
Dont know what they ll play tomorrow but should be 20 overs from 5.00pm in my book.
Dukes eh? Ok . Thats what they play with in our ones league games. The twos have to play with Read*rs cr*p
What do I do? I just cut the grass.
£80 to do the teas!?!? Or did I read that wrong?
Fois gras? Truffles? Pink champagne?
If I do ours, they cost between £25 and £30. It's a cricket match for cripe's sake, not a Michelin restraunt do.
Plated salad - £30. Pizza, chips, sos rolls and sarnies - £25. Plenty of cakes, tea and squash.
Even Waitrose couldn't get that to £80, could they?
The ciderman rolls
MCC games, always include the finest wines on the lunch table !
P'raps that's why they don't come here Bath! I could do home brew cider (still 4 barrels left in the garage), but the vines aren't ready til autumn (and they'll only do a few bottles)
The ciderman rolls
Oh for chris sakes i might have known you d do it for tuppence!
we have to pay someone to do it, cost of food is about £30 plus labour, no it isnt £80. Anyway, very pleased for you Jon.
Back to the point. Just back, lost by 20 runs. We won toss and wanted to bat but they insisted on batting and got 266 for 6. we got 230 odd but pitch started playing up a bit, very dry etc, not a minefield but more difficult.
they supplied 2 of the cheapest pieces of concrete cr*p for balls and of course paid nothing. Only 6 of them left in bar and I left after 20 mins of the finish
What do I do? I just cut the grass.
They bat first wherever they play Barry.
Well Barry that's all over now and you can forget them. Yes it does seem they have the right to bat first. Enjoy the rest of your season.
Can you just is the longest sentence in the world !!!!!!!
wicketdevil have you read barries posts, enjoy the rest of his season, I somehow doubt it, I expect the next rant to be on here by the time I get home, after the MCC though it will take some topping.
I wonder where Groundsmen get the grumpy tag from HMMMMMMMMM. Ian
Can you just is the longest sentence in the world !!!!!!!
Its all right, he is actually really quite nice in the flesh... just reckon he is going for honourary GOGGA membership and he is just trying to get as ranty as Sumo...lol
Plastic.... it's The End I tell you... THE END!!!!
Im lovely.
Apart from gathering useful advice, the whole point of forums is to have a rant.
Yes Bath I gathered that, shame though, pitch started going through the top in the second innings!
What do I do? I just cut the grass.
It's called a club volunteer network.
No-one gets paid for anything at our club, be they groundsman, tea maker, secretary, treasurer or whatever.

When the Marylebone Cricket Club had a game on my ground all the players had a glass of Port before the game started.
