On sat rain was about, important 1st X1 league match at home.
I was down there by 9 am pulling cover off, Bowdrying water off, trimming and rolling. left large bucket of sawdust cos i thought they will get rain.
And it rained heavily during game. I came down in morning(still playing in twos myself) to find that thick wood shavings had been put on every end of the square.
The Umpires were concerned with the health and safety aspect cos water the ends were very wet ( and so was the square according to an independent witness). So the captain went and got bags of wood shavings from the local pet shop and covered every end with the cr*p.
Now there was a county player bowling from the other side who has been timed at 94 mph, so its ok for someone to hurl a hard ball down at someone but its a worry to have someone slip and get a muddy ar*e.
Took 6 hours on Monday to try and clear the stuff off. Fortunately it was a dry sunny day, if it had rained Monday, the sh*t would have been buried in there for ever.
My point is, whatever happened to common sense?
The pitch and the ends of the 2 pitches either side were dry apart from some leak spots, so why do that to the whole square?
I know they were desperate to play but Ive never seen so much sawdust in over 40 years of club cricket.
What do I do? I just cut the grass.

Our 2nds were at Home , currently 2nd in their division put them on pitch 2, downpour @ 12.30, started at 3.15 instead of 2, they played handful of overs on prepared pitch, ends too slippy , used too little sawdust IMHO, they then played on totally unprepared track 7, scored 178 off 35, bowled out opposition for 82.
Next days friendly called off, square like ww3 had occurred on it, my repairs on track 4 for this Saturday totally ruined, so using track 2 again for 1st XI this Saturday.

Unfortunately all sounds very familiar.

I'm glad it wasn't just me being menstrual!. when I arrived on Sunday morning I found the same thing on every used wicket end (newly seeded may I add), plus massive piles dumped on the outfield big piles of wet pet saw dust left for me to sort out (I did leave bins with top quality sawdust for them) . I know it's my job but when I work 7 days a week as it is, and have 2 wet grounds to get ready for 1 o'clock starts it was a bit of a pain, I wouldn't mind so much but it rained so heavily on Saturday that they lost 17 overs and then lost the game and of course most other matches ended up abandoned
Every blade of grass has it's angel that bends over it and whispers "Grow, grow"

Quality of the sawdust is not a problem for me, have worked in the offices at a..........................Sawmill for 27 years.
Just waiting for the comments this weekend about the square and the track not looking quite A1........Reeeeeeeeeeeeally.!!!!!!!
Oh well pleasant evening ahead (hopefully) cutting (preening) outfield.

Over it now. If just one cricketer (preferably the Captain) had said "Sorry about the mess Barry but we were desperate to play" it would have gone a long way.
But I know that groundsman are only there to be a kicking post.

I was playing last week and the panel umpires were insistent on sawdust being placed wherever water had accumulated. We needed to play so I went ahead with it. Luckily the Protea verticutter picks it up a treat.

Well Sean, it was dustpan and broom and a bit with the blower for me, some of it still embedded in some ends. Still perhaps the shavings will soak up some of todays rain!
