Message Board - Cricket: collecting arisings after game

24 Aug 2010 by dickie c

Hi all,

Is there any mileage in collecting the arisings after sweeping the ends of a used pitch after a match? Swept ends between innings and after match at the weekend and collected a bucket full of dust. It's very fine but is it useable rather than lobbing it away?

Cheers

Yes, it is usable (for me) - but not in large quantities. When I thump down the repairs (for a game in a few hours or next day) I use the dust (rather than grass clippings) to slow down the drying of the repair. I don't need to bother about brushing the dust of the repair before the match like I would grass clippings. If I do the repair more than a day in advance of the match then I'll use grass clippings though as they seem to slow drying more.

Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.

I do the same with my arisings, Jon, as an aid to pitch repairs.
But I also use it, with a little sand and seed added, for repairs to my outfield.

I know no boundaries.

Now that's a good idea. I hate throwing something that might be useful in the grass pile.
That reminds me, I need to order a tonne or so of sand.

Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.

Just like Mario. I use them on end rep's if needed, and also around nets and in foorholes in the nets run off area.Last post season I used the debris from the square scarification to level out some large depressions in the outfield, great results and self seeding hoorah !!!.

I just love this site! Never have used arisings but will give it a go now.

What do I do? I just cut the grass.

I have also used arisings to fill sunken drainage runs. Have a couple of heaps around the Ground where a nice Ryegrass turf has sprung up from just 'dust'. Trouble is the 3,615,702 Rabbits I have get to it before me.

I often throw the arisings on the outside edge of the square - knowing that in a year or two I will be turning that edge into a new training strip. Get the clay content up early.
Also, like others, if I have a hole anywhere in the outfield I will use them there.
