Message Board - Cricket: Vertilising during renovation
27 Aug 2010 by Sunlover
Last season (my first as full time groundsman), I fertilized a few days after all my renovation work was finished. However, I was recently informed that it's best to fertilise at the same time when seeding. Would this not scorch the seed? I have also read that it's best to fertilise a week before renovations so the seed has nutrients available immediately. Or is it best to fertilise after renovations? From experience, what method is advisable?

I usually put on a pre seeder at the same time as the seed and dressing. I also use a seed coated with Headstart to aid germination.

I don't apply fert until after the initial cut following renovations. Can't see the point of feeding before as 1, I'm not trying to encourage whats left after vigorous scarification and 2, seed has it's own energy source built in to get it germinated. This usually occurs around 14-20 days after completion.
Put on a preventative fungicide and instigate the root enhancing programme at the same time.
Some people are like Slinky's, totally useless but amusing if you push them down the stairs

It is reconmmended to apply preseeder a week before, Which i find is ok on football/rugbyoutfields etc.
However, difficult to do on the square when you are continually working the surface - cutting, scarifying & "sow" on.
so i also put it down when seeding with no problems.

Each one to their own on this one I think, Paul.
My thoughts are - that if you've been following a managed fertilising regime throughout the season, then nutrient levels should be ok for new seed to germinate. As Olaf alludes to - " seed has it's own energy source built in ".
I tend to wait until the new plants are up, about three weeks, then fertilise with 5-5-10 or something silmilar.
Don't get me wrong, I have used a pre-seeder at the time of sowing, but didn't notice much difference to a couple of pitches which I didn't do!
Each to their own!!
I know no boundaries.
