Message Board - Cricket: Top Dressing

8 Sep 2010 by Michael Carlisle

Hi again!

What is the best way, with minimal equipment (dragmat - but possibly plenty of enthusiastic bods), of applying our top dressing of loam to the cricket square?

Comments appreciated.

Talk to a local friendly club or golf course and borrow something otherwise it's out with the spreading shovels, lute and dragmat.

Line the bags up down the centre line of each track. Spread them in a continuous line, then use your lute to equalise the loam along that line. Now lute either way from that line, standing three or four feet from the centre line. Do it from both sides. Next, stand on the centre line and lute sideways again - both ways. Finally, push the lute along the entire length of the track, working across the square. then repeat sideways.

No-one said renovations were easy, but it works if you have no spreader and I can do a whole square in about 4 hours with one "bag setter" helper. It's hard work.....and a drop spreader is much easier!

wheel barrow and shovel works pretty well - but takes a while.

Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.
