Message Board - Natural Turf: top dressing
8 Sep 2010 by Peter Anthony Harsum
Hello
I've just top dressed a cricket square and the heavens have opened before brushing in, any recommendations on what to do next?

Your going to have to let it dry out first peter. Then try again on the eges at first to see how it responds when brushing ,matting etc? Try and be patient and not rush it.
My advice would be to dress one track at a time in the future. That way you can work in the loam and if need be, cover it if possible as you work across the square,

This happened to me last year, and it was a nightmare.
After top dressing it persisted down, the loam took on a nice crust, then would not budge or be worked in, i tried our graden to break it up, tried our amazon scarifier to break it up, in the end i had it Koro'ed off
Another 30 mins and it would have been timed to perfection.......

Poor bloke`s probably panicking now niel. It happend to us in the summer building a new track! just finshed off levels, went for cuppa, Heavens came down. luckly it dried out later on in the afternoon and we managed to get rakes on to re-tilth it. lesson learnt......

Unfortunately it's one of those things that happens sometimes.
When it comes to breaking it up Neil you really need to be there just at the right time. You have to catch it before it crusts - that could be during the day or even middle of the night. Loss of a nights sleep is better than having to get the koro in.
Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.

Hello
Today was lovely sunshine which has dried out the top dressing we put down, as soon as it turns a pale dry look once the dew had lifted naturally we tried one edge and it was fine, drag matted it all in and has turned out better than was exspected.
