Message Board - Machinery: Jd 955 tractor problem

9 Sep 2010 by tavdebo

Hello
I have a jd 955 coming up to 4400 hours now it has
been a good tractor and worked quite hard on the golf course where i work ..this year though it has been out of action on 3 occasions with hydraulic oil leaks and now the seal on the pto shaft has developed a leak.
Went to see the boss and was agreed to upgrade with a newer tractor next year so know problems there...tractor though has broken down early and not gonna bother repairing but my question is .. what has happpened for diesel fuel to mix with engine oil in the sump and then gush out of a breather pipe
cheers

Could be several causes.
Leaky injector dripping.
Injection pump seal...
etc.
Probably get a better trade-in price for it if it is fixed/running. What are you replacing it with?

Diesel in the sump is generally not a good sign.

Piston rings perhaps? Might also be worth looking at the injectors, but that wouldn't account for the problems at the breather pipe unless a faulty injector(s) led to the failure of the rings.

Edit: Beat me too it Sumo... that's experience for you...

Thanks for reply guys!! have not given much thought to replacement but would like up to 40 Hp rating but with more lift capacity..had to be wary of weight when hiring hollowcorers and other machines with the 955.
I have a massey 265 but that is a bit heavy to take on the greens..will talk to boss tomorrow but going to Turkey next week so i am not going to worry about it now.
cheers

Just like to add i used the tractor all day on wednesday mowing the rough with no problems no diesel blowing from breather then this morning i checked the oil as usual and its filled to the top of the dipstick with diesel so it must have filled overnight?

Draining into the sump overnight suggests it is probably the lift pump failure - which is mounted on the side of the injection pump of a 955.

Order new lift pump (AM882588) & gasket (M801314) . Drain sump - Refill with JD Plus-50 oil for best performance and new oil filter (M806419).

Replacement - you should look at the JD-4720 bwhich should be spec'd with 3rd SCV, e-hydro, Load Match & Motion Match as well as the latest AUT Automatic Throttle control and Galaxy Balloon tyres which is ideally suited to Golf Course work.

Enjoy your turkish bath...
