Message Board - Football: Spiking vs Slitting

6 Oct 2010 by Stephen Harrison

Hi,
I have just gotten involved with the pitch maintenance for my club and our committee appear to have a conflict in terms of what is best for the pitch spiking or slitting. The guys that to date have looked after the pitch believe slitting is as good as spiking. However we have received information to say that slitting isn't worth a damn and spiking with a bit of heave is the way to go. Having no experience in this area I am looking for a bit of independant advice. We normally aerate the pitch once per year.

i spike with a toro procore we do our pitch at least once every two weeks. never really used a slitter so cant comment i believe slitters prune the roots but if you get a dry spell they can open up a tad

Hi S
Both... alternatively, in the right conditions...
By spiking once a year I assume you mean something like a Vertidrain Tine type machine, by slitting do you mean by Groundbreaker or Earthquake knife type machine, it is important for us to know what you mean.. then there is the soil type and location to consider,,,, then we would at least have something to guess on,
Was the info received from someone who didn't own a 'slitter' but had a 'spiker' or was it from a club with totally different soil type and conditions..
And most importantly has what has been done before worked well... if so why change?

Plastic.... it's The End I tell you... THE END!!!!

during the footy season....on my pitches i slit once a week, and always the same direction.....goal to goal....i have a K-Two Aerovator....it has 85 tines on it....the most tines on any machine of its size on the market...i also have a 2.1m Aeroking "vertidrain"....(just to determine what the machine is....)...and i use this twice a season...to deep decompact, and add heave to the ground...as my learned frined Barry says, there must be some confusion as to which machine does what according to your committee bods....Stepehen, what kit are you using at the mo....because to my mind a slitter of my type is better than nothng.....and i would argue the toss wioth your committee that the slitter IS worth a damn..i didnt have one game called of alst season only with the snow....

Ticky supports British farmers...!!
