Message Board - Health & Safety: Petrol/Diesel storage

8 Nov 2010 by PURLEY

Having searched all over the place I wonder if anyone can help.

I am looking for guidance on how much Petrol/Diesel can be stored - to be used for grounds maintenance.

To date have stored 2 jerry cans of Petrol and 1 of diesel max in Grounds maintenance garage at a Parish Recreation Ground.

Who has any idea if this is ok - should it be stored outside in a bunded tank??

Hope you can help?

Will often be dictated by your insurance company who may insist it kept in a locked fire proof storage locker/chest away from the building. Look on the hse site for more information and use the search box for help.

In theory, it's a max of 200lt in unbunded storage.

Exact amounts vary from place to place dependent on:
local fire officers' guidelines
insurance details.

Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.

Jlawrence has it spot on: first find out what your local fire officers guidelines/limit is (particularly for petrol) and also on how it should be stored. This varies depending on where you are. Then you should inform your insurance of the details and make sure your policy covers you for this.

As a rule of thumb though, it is best practice to store all liquids classed as hazardous waste - diesel, oils, chemicals etc in a bunded container. That is to say a containment where if they were to spill out (say the diesel barrel split) the bund would retain all of the spillage and stop it contaminating the surrounding area. Bunds will ideally be able to cope with an extra 10% of the material stored in them.

All hazardous materials should also carry the appropriate signage on the store/container, and preferably also on the exterior of the building which contains them.
