Message Board - Football: Have I killed my pitch?

045 9 Dec 2010 by Paul Dunderdale

A few weeks ago ( before the heavy frost - we have had no snow here) we put down a granular winter feed to give the football pitch a bit of a boost. The mix was 6+5+10+6FE. The feed was put down by a broadcast spreader. We have had heavy frost since and now we have a mini thaw I notice there are several black areas on the pitch. I am hoping this is temporary or have I killed the pitch??

Hi Paul

The darker black areas will probabley be from the FE in your feed. Unlikely to cause problem will go in week or two.

Cheers Ant, sure you are right, Just a bit disconcerting - the pitch is good quality and usually the spring and summer feeds don't give the same problems. The only new element is the trace of iron so think you are spot on. Thanks,

paul would think in normal conditions the iron will green up the pitch quickly but when we have weather like this maybe a more softer approach could be more benefical check the forecast would the pitch use the fertiliser applied ie at what temp is the nitrogen available. have you a nice undersoiled pitch.

Cheers Sculler. It's always hard when we all work full time and the reality is we feed the pitch when we have time and the forecasts are favourable. That's the case for most volunteers I guess. We have had a little rain lately so hopefully that will help, Thanks

Pitch is looking a lot better - before the snow tonight! As most of you have said, the marks are from the iron in the feed and temporary. Thanks all. Paul

The snow has gone, the pitch has had a little rain and is looking remarkably well. The feed has done the job I think and it is certainly looking very good for this time of year. Also helps that I have cancelled training due to the snow and heavy frosts too I suppose :)
