organic material

They are talking about debris that is found below the growing point of the grass plant, were old stems ,leaf and root residues of grass lie, an accumulation of this debris if not managed or broken down by living organisms in the soil will become a thatch layer. and if not treated and managed can lead to many problems that we find and associate with poor turf.
This organic material is only benificial if it can be broken down to release nutients and help water holding properties for the soil.
The main contibutors to braking down this OM is Air, water, weathering and soil organisms. to ensure that these function the appropiate maintenance regimes should be undertaken to help these activities.
