Has anyone got any ideas for preventing or treating this turf disease? What causes it?

take all patch

this disease generally occurs when you try to neutralise an acidic profile by applying lime.also keep up the right maintenance by this you are discouraging pathogens which will affect the grass plant.

Take all patch

This disease affects bentgrasses in fine turf situations. The fungus responsible for this disease Gaeumannomyces graminis is usally already established in old soil systems but does not appear untill the conditions are right for its emergance which usally happens during the summer months and may progress into the autumn. this fungus generally remains in the soil in low populations and does not cause any particular problems has other bacterial and fungi keep it controlled.

However when soil conditions alter (such as an increase in soil pH by application of alkaline materials)
results in reduced populations of the benificial fungi/ bacteria, coupled with wet and moist surfaces enables the take all fungus to develop and lead to severe attacks. New green constructions especially sand based greens that do not have established micro oganisms are also suseptible to attack.
also if you have over used pesticides and fungicides these will have an affect on micro organism balance.

Take all patch over winters and remains dormant in thatch layers waiting for the optimium conditions for it to spread and attack, poor drainage and surface water retention will favour the spread of take all patch.

The best form of defence is to ensure the soil and turf is kept healthy by good cultral methods, aeration to keep good air and water movement through the soil to ensure good micro organism activity, reducing thatch layers, regular feeding of nutrients to promote grass growth . keeping the soil pH levels correct , check the ph of materials and irrigation water,

Only use pesticides has a last resort.
