when turf managers talk about rolling winter pitches ie before a football match why does this operation take place as rolling willrestrict percolation rates andcapp the surface off.can anybody help?

Rolling

After your repair and divoting work you can lightly roll using your pedestrian mower. If you think that surface drainage would be effected then aerate using a small diameter tine or needle tine (or even the dreaded slitter!) after rolling. This operation can be done before a game with no effect to play.
