Name change
The word "Groundsman"does not reflect the quality , skill, dedication and experience of our profession. It still conjures up the image of donkey jacket and string for a belt. We are a truly professional industry and justifiably need a title that reflects this. I submit "Turfcraftsman" for the turfcraft industry. It will be interesting to hear comments.
name change
I'm not one for being over politically correct, but why are we still referring to grounds MEN? The fire brigade has welcomed diversity and now has 'fire FIGHTERS, why can't this industry do the same?
Perhaps if there was a more general title, more females would consider a career in the industry.

name change
I get the impression that greenkeepers are happy with their title. If so, then why not change groundsman to pitchkeeper.
Being a non sexist title it is also likely to keep Groundsmaiden happy.
name change
Just to add another what about
Turfcarers
Well its a thought ![]()

What about ...
... grass strokers
Hmmm
Turfkeepers, Pitchkeepers. Well, they're better than Groundsman I suppose! ![]()

Personally I like the term bush stroker![]()
How about...
Turf Technicians?
Or
Sports Surface Technologist?
But in reality, who outside the industry cares what we call ourselves?

About Turf Manager
names
Chris that's a snappy name but we may not get away with it....
It's just the same when we approach a local authority and ask for grounds maintenance, or parks, open spaces, er leisure services, I think the name thing is about the way turf managers are perceived. It's a long road toward getting respect and Colin, although the impression is that no one cares it's our job within the industry to increase understanding and awareness, then respect follows.![]()
The light at the end of the tunnel is not a train
names
I think that the name Sports Surface Managers covers the full range of our responsibilities and abilities

What's in a Name
I think it's a great idea..the vast range of skills and experience required are not reflected in the title 'Groundsmen' This affects the publics' opinion of the job and, therefore, the interest in joining our profession. We need a name that will reflect our many talents..(bush stroking included!)
Ground MASTER?! maybe...

What's in a name?
If it ain't broke, then don't try to fix it. Why get ideas above our stations, when we know that changing our name won't make any difference, it'll just make us look like sad old desperate industry that's trying to keep up with the Jones'...........Look how well Consignia went down.
We're Groundsmen (I suppose it dhould change to Groundsperson for equality and political correctness), or we're Greenkeepers........and these are titles we should be proud of.

Re:What to be called?
On a serious note, my team has the club logo with Greenkeeping Staff underneath.
Very P.C correct !!
What to be called?
It's funny in way that this is a topic as it is also one of the topics on my seminar.
Groundsman to Groundsperson I can almost live with.
The most common name is becoming either Turf Manager or Grounds Manager both politically correct.
I once had several titles Cleaner, Curator, Head Groundsman, Groundsman, Greenkeeper and hey You !

kesh, why drag up a 3 year old thread like this one. If youve had to go back through three years of postings to find something to take issue with i think were probably better off without you in the organisations
get over yourself !!
I know what a binman does but am confused as to the resonsibilities of a Waste Disposal Technician.
Groundsman is descriptive and I for one always say I am a Groundsman when asked what I do for a living.
Of course the grass looks good. The sun is shining.
