Message Board - Other Sports: Rugby posts

outdoor 23 Feb 2011 by Rob Bradshaw

Hi all

A complete stranger to rugby posts as im usually involved with other sports. Just recentley we have took on rugby at our 52 acre site in St-ives.

I have previous put football sockets in the ground many of years now but never come across rugby sockets.
I have read through the guidlines that we got from our suppliers. They are suggesting that a m2 hole which to me seems correct because got to think of the height of the posts and wouldnt want the socket moving.

Has any of you guys situated sockets before and roughly how much materials would you suggest? bear in mind the sockets are about 1 metre high and have a cross section that should be sunk into concrete to stop play and movement.

Thanks really much apprechite if you could help.

Rob, the recommended foundation for Rugby is 1 cubic metre of concrete around each socket and until recently I have always thought that is plenty enough, on sheltered sites we have used 750mm Augers successfully.
If howevere you are anything like Mike A' s site where you have strong winds, and I mean strong enough to bend the poles a couple of foot diagonal in the wind then I would suggest you make 1m by 1m by 1m your minimum.
Hope that helps

Rugby Post instalation 004

Rob , we done these last summer,

holes are 1m x 1m x 1m

we used about 40 bags post crete to "set the sockets" prior to the concrete pour.

it was about 1.5 3m concrete IIRC on top of this to fully set.

That's the reason we used the postcrete first Barry, so we could check and measure the sockets as we went, and being quick setting no little darlings could come along and wiggle them about!!!

We done 4 sets last year, exactly the same as Neil has laid out, except for one set where we had water within 4" of the surface... that was fun!!

Do as per Neil's guidelines, take your time and you'll be right. 1m x 1m x 1m is what was specified in the installation instructions, so that what we went with, and they are still standing.

Barry, back in my first winter at our place, we got a set of 13m steel posts - 6mm thick if I remember rightly... they didn't get through the winter, come in one morning and there they were, sheared about 6" above the surface, left laying flat on the ground!
