Long Jump pit

Does anyone know the minimum depth of sand required for a long jump pit, if there is such a thing and what type of sand should it be?, would an ordinary sportsground sand suffice or does it need to be specific for longjump pits.
any help would be appreciated!

The main concerns here are health and safety, in other words the depth will be defined by how much is going to get kicked out, i.e. regularity of use before you get to the bottom of the sand and risk injury to athletes. The type of sand is governed by similar factors in that you don't want it to be of the 'staining' variety so therefore use the types that are ideal for playpits etc, the white washed materials that also give good appearance. The other consideration that comes to mind is the particle size distribution, you don't want it too coarse to cause abrasions, then again not too fine so that it remains free draining- hope this all helps! If you need the sand Dave and John at Pitchcare can source it too.
