Message Board - Football: EXTRA MARK ON PITCH

11 Mar 2011 by GARY DAWSON

Hi it's probably been asked before but i couldn't find the answer. What is the extra line marked on the goal line between touchline and penalty box for?

I have seen it on lots of Premiership pitches but have never seen it on a grassroots pitch nor worked out what it corresponds to.

I am sure someone knows the answer on here.

10 yards, to indicate that an opposing player must be 10 yards from a corner kick

Not sure but I remember some debate about this mark, it is not an official mark of the pitch, but somethging that the groundsman put in to assist the ref. You will notice that the mark is seperate, ie not connected to the touchline.

Don't talk to me about Contractors Wonka, I am one myself......

The Mark is measured 10 yards from the edge of the arc or 11 yards from the corner of the pitch

All correct answers, the mark is not set in stone in law or regulations concerning pitch markings and as already stated to assist the ref

"Marks may be made off the fi eld of play, 9.15 m (10 yds) from the corner
arc and at right angles to the goal lines and the touch lines, to ensure that
defending players retreat this distance when a corner kick is being taken."

Quite what the point would be of making a mark on the touchline I don't know. Can't see anyone trying to defend a corner there!!

Dunno what the problem with the link is. Looks okay in the reply box.

From the posh end of the room!!
