Guys

Just a quick question...

I have found a '98 John Deere 5400 for sale, decent price... question is, are they any good?

Cheers

Have a search here mike - http://www.tractorbynet.com/

Its a US site but has loads of info - great ideas in the build it yourself section.

Mike not sure if it helps? I have a JD5415 tractor bought in 2008, it has now completed just over 1000 hours. In this time I have had two clutch hosuings go, two lots of air conditioning hoses, two lots of lifting brackes at £500 a pair.

This is a rebadged Renault tractor and to my mind performs poorly considering it is JD75 Hp tractor. In real terms it is suitable only for light work - gang mowing, spraying, light implements, etc. Anything demanding and it fails to complete the task. In my view its very disappointing.

Hope this may or may not help?

Regards

Lee

Thanks for this, Lee.

Not sure it is from the same series? I have spoken to the previous owner - fully serviced every four months since new, no major faults, very clean and 'solid'. Certainly looks right for what we need, but many thanks for your input.

personally i wouldnt touch it....these are definately re-badged renaults...and they were crap tractors at the best of times...i would hold on to your money and look at alternatives....the JD5400 is 75 hp...you could find a tidy MF 4345 , or a Kubota ME9000

You do surprise me, Ticky... I thought you were JD through and through.

Had a look online for the Massey and Kubota you refer too... bit too pricey for us i'm afraid. Working to approx 10k. The Deere ticked all of the boxes... very well maintained, quicke loader, plenty of power for what we need etc.

Thanks for all input though... glad I asked

Mike - we have a JD 3100 - its a Renault - done near 10Khours with minmal trouble,. and is still going strong.

Its the luck of the draw IMO - go with your gut feeling.

Mike, Ticky is JD through and through, or at least was. The tractor you refer to is actually a Renault painted in Deere colours mate. Not the same Deere quality i am afraid.

I didn't know Deere sold 'badged' stuff, and I had heard that renault were pretty good tractors... I bow to your superior knowledge however.

The old owners loved it... didn't want to get rid of it, but it was moved on as part of a replacement policy. The maintenance on it was seemingly meticulous, Have also spoken to someone who has one the same with 9000 hours on it and he swears by it - this one has 3900 hours on it.

You pays your money and takes your chance mike.

That's what i'm worried about... it's my employers money... not mine. Last thing I would want to do is buy a lemon with someone else's money Have to sleep on it, I think.

definately a JD boy me...along with Kubota....love them for their build quality, reliability, and should i need any, parts availability...Renault never built a decent tractor apart from one, which was the TX145 circa 88-89...6 pot turbo 145 hp...bullet proof, now Renault took over by Claas, which build fantastic grass machines, combines and foragers, but absolutely garbage tractors...i can give you a list of dissatisfied operators of Renault/Claas main prob is transmissions...dont last, and a bugger to repair...i know a local guy who actually got so fed up with his Renault that he told the dealer mending it to part ex it for a Massey...

Okay Ticky, i'll take your word for it, and have to take all input into account before I make any decision.

Interestingly, I thought Class tractors were good... shows how much I know!!
