WHAT PERCENTAGE OF THATCH IS REMOVED FROM A BOWLING GREEN BY 1 DEEP SCARIFING 2 HOLLOW TINING

Avatar: Akrotiri 14 Apr 2011 by Ken Barber

I don't know..... what percentage?

Think about it Ralph.... Thickness and type of scarifying blade? Size of hollow tine? All effect the end result!

Using A Greentek scarifyer will remove more that a Sissis. A Graden would be different again. Using small 6mm cluster type hollow tines would remove far more than 12mm tines at 50mm spacing.

I would not concentrate on how much you can remove at any one time, because you could stress the green out, especially if it turned too cold or too hot and dry!

I would concentrate more on regular aeration to maintain an open surface and get the bugs breaking down the thatch for you. this can be speeded up by applying bacteria desigbned for this purpose. Along side a scarifying program.

I am sorry to say this but thatch is a sign of bad managemenT....

Either too much fertiliser, too much water or not enough cultural practices throughout the year...... Or a combination of all the above!

the percentage removed will depend on how much you've got in there to begin with.
If the thatch extends below the depth you can reach with the scarifier (say >25mm) then the percentage removed will be less that say with 5mm thatch.

Of course there's no bounce, bend your back and put some bloody effort in.
