Scarifying an Outfield

Our cricket outfield has some large areas of moss infestation. Is it worth with a small power scarifier, scarifying lightly some small areas of the outfield.

The scarifier hasn't abox to pick them up though.

Don't scarify the moss areas as you will only spread the problem further and wider.

Try to talk to a contractor if you can about applying an iron compound to treat the moss or alternatively spread a lawn sand which will treat the moss and also benefit your outfield. Lawn sand can be a relatively cost effective treatment and you can apply that yourself with appropriate care.

Good Luck

give it a good spike only moss kill as a last resort as this will prove expensive

Moss can safely be removed via scarification when dead. Be careful when applying sulphate of iron as a moss killer since this can gradually increase the acidity of the soil and then make the problem worse next year. For this reason I always prefer to use a chemical moss killer.

It may be worth spending your money on some fertiliser instead, since if you can get the grass to grow well then this should sort the moss out in itself, as well as giving you a denser sward (which should help reduce moss next year).
