Message Board - Football: Sticky goal posts

wasties.bmp 14 Apr 2011 by Four Oaks

We have this every year. We remove the crossbars and
then find that we can't easilly pull out the uprights. They
aren't rusted in, it appears to be suction that is stopping
us. Does anyone have a "wrinkle" to make this job more
easy? The uprights are held in place by sockets.

Presentation is the name of the game.

Four Oaks - if you have a tractor with a 3 point linkage on, back it up to the post so the post is in line with the rear linkages. Get a strong piece of rope, and tie a clove hitch right at the bottom of the post. Now pull each link arm (lowered) in as close as you can get them together, and tie each end of the rope to each link arm, as tight as you can... a few basic hitches should do the trick here. Then have one person hold the post steady, and raise the link arms slowly - it should work a treat.

For info on how to tie a clove hitch, click here

Also, try to use something like Sisal rope, rather than nylon rope as it grips much better.

Hope this helps

We have been known to wrap a cloth around the post and use a stilson wrench, twist and pull,

Although we normally get two of us on the post and wiggle and pull and they normally come out.

stinky when foxes are involved!!! Mind the backsplash!!

Using a trolley Jack and a big piece of wood, slowly "jack" up the posts before you remove the cross bars, ( we take ours out in one go, much safer IMO)

Or, as Sipho suggess, use a oil filter wrench to twist the post, pull up as you rotate, we have to do this on our rugby posts.

Yes thanks but with much grunting and huffing and puffing
and by getting the help of someone with a better grip than I.
The methods suggested have been put on file for next season!!!

We remove our aluminium goalposts after each game*. Dunno if this is a practical proposition for Mr. Oaks but I've also found that cleaning out the sockets prior to insertion helps.

It's surprising what you find in them as well!!

Perhaps an occasional clean out (if practical) would help?

*For the pedantics amongst you, no, we don't remove them if there happens to be two games on the same day.

From the posh end of the room!!

Grease the posts before they go out.
Been huffing and puffing on one final post myself today. There's always one!
