Message Board - Machinery: Imants rotoknife
23 May 2011 by Mike
Guys
Looking forwards to the next step in transforming our playing fields, I have been looking at aeration options of late. The first stage of this is a slitter - having looked at many (K-two, Sisis, Greentek etc), I have identified that the Rotoknife may be our best option, due to it's versatility. Thatch management is an issue, as are surface levels and deep aeration.
So, ultimately, i'm just looking for feedback from anyone who has used this type of machine.
Any feedback much appreciated.

Hi Mike,
Both the Immants or the Ground-breaker are great tools but don't expect to penetrate more than 8" because this is unlikely. However, because of the action of the off-set blades they both will shatter the ground below the depth of the blades..... getting down to more like 12". Timing is the key when it comes to getting optimum shattering effect. Autumn, when the sub-soil is likely to be at its driest, will improve shattering and allow winter frosts to penetrate much deeper, thus improving soil structure.
The bonus with the Ground-break is that you can add the Sand Master attachment which puts sand into the slits as you go.

KB think you are getting these machines mixed up.
The Imants Rotoknife is not the same as a Groundbreaker,
and can carry out 4 different tasks.
However the Imants Shockwave is the original Rotary Decompactor, that others have tried to copy.
Trust this clarifies any confusion

Thanks fir info folks. Compaction relief will be taken care of with a vertidrain. I like the look of the rotoknife for keeping thatch in check by keeping the upper rootzone well aerated, whilst also going deep for gaseous exchange.
Richard - do you ever come across any secondhand ones?
