Anyone know where I could find and afficial copy of the rules governing the use of triangular corner flags on a football pitch.
I have done a search on the net but no luck as yet.

I don't think there are any rules regarding the flags. From memory the rule says the corner flag post must be not less than 1.5 metres with a non-pointed top.
I'll have a look.

I've heard this before but I've never seen any rule about it anywhere. Could you provide us with a link please Mr. Mmmm (I assume you're a Mr.)
All I can find is much as I said before:
"A fl agpost, not less than 1.5 m (5 ft) high, with a non-pointed top and a flag
must be placed at each corner"

.........But it could be a myth..........

Research suggests that it is a myth. However, it seems to be believed by a hell of a lot of people.
My advice, sipho, would be to contact the F.A. for clarification.

Thanks Chaps Ill do so.
We have just had our main football pitch laser levelled, and its the schools quatercentenery celebrations this year. The old Carthusians won the FA cup in 1881
As the first match on the "new" pitch will be against the OCFC I thought it would be nice to have the triangular corner flags.

The link is a film 'Twin Town' about two amiable Welsh brothers, worth a watch and they decide in the bath who can have triangular corner flags.

I'm nowhere near an expert in football but I did a bit of reading last night, either because I'm just sad or interested in this kind of anomaly and it's not raining so I'm not fretting about covers.
As far as I understand, the original FA Cup was competed for on the basis that if you won it three times then you kept it (as Brazil did in 1970 with the gold Jules Rimet trophy). The Wanderers FC won the cup three times in succession (1876, 77, 78) but declined to take possession of it. They were granted or possibly adopted a distinction to prove their achievements instead. History is rather vague here. Hence the triangular flags/pennants. Similarly all other cup winners have adopted the same 'trophy' along the way, namely triangular flags. Another one to top this is Blackburn Rovers. Along with the now defunct Wanderers club, they also won the FA Cup three times in successive years (1884, 85, 86) and claim the honour by being the only team to sport triangular flags INCLUDING their club emblem displayed on each. The Wanderers, prior to their demise also exercised this right apparently.
I think it's rather like a lot of Victorian badge vanity, most of which has now disappeared. What remains is of significant historical interest however. Perhaps the best example in contemporary cricket is Rugby School still playing in duck egg blue rather than white.
If I was you Sipho, and I'd love to be in your position, I'd have special triangular flags made for the occasion. You couldn't by tradition have the school or club emblem on them but you could perhaps have a discrete 1880-1881 .v. Old Etonians 3-0 on them :-). They might be worth quite a lot at an auction dinner later actually.

I think you're wrong there, eddy. When researching sipho's original question I came across someone who claimed to have e-mailed the FA about it (Blackburn's flags) and they said it wasn't the case.
I'll see if I can find it again.

Here it is:
"Miss Smudge,
Thank you for contacting The Football Association.
We have confirmed this with The FA's Historian and he has explained that it is a myth. As long as a flagpost meets the criteria set under the Laws of the Game (not less than 1.5m high, with a non-pointed top and a flag), clubs can display their crest on the flag if they wish.
Kind regards

Thanks for correcting me Aladdin. That burys the urban myth soundly so sorry for confusing matters. I wonder whether it's been doing the rounds before "Twin Town" and the writers picked up on it too.

No worries, eddy. It seems, as I said in a previous post, that an awful lot of people believe it.
I always like to find out the facts if at all possible.

No Sipho, go for it. If there is no precendent get the flags made and auction them. Good moneymaker for the MiC Football. the FA historian obviously has no problem.
