Message Board - Cricket: topdressing to level undulations

8 Jun 2011 by sandeep

Greetings from Canada. I have a question regarding topdressing during the season to fix some undulations. We had the square laid out about two years ago. The contractor seeded the square before properly leveling it off. Now we have some strips that have undulations in them. The contractor couldn't get the original clay that was laid out on the square, so now we have a loam which is supposed to be compatible
I'm an amatuer at this so I had a few questions for the experts on this board.
I have read that any major topdressing to level the playing surface should be done at the end of the season so that the topdressing can mix in with the existing soil and not cause layring. How long is sufficient for this to happen? Is it possible to speed up this process by mixing the two soils beforehand so that they bind better and use this mixture to slowly bring up the low areas.
I was thinking about using a nail to punch vertical holes in the low lying areas to help the topdressing bind
It is hard for us in this part of the world to get qualified advise

Are you in the GTA Sandeep (MLCC).?
I have done some work in BC where the climate is more suitable.
You might consider calling in at the Toronto skating/Curling/ Cricket club for some local advice as the climate in Ontario is so diffferent to here in the UK.

Some people are like Slinky's, totally useless but amusing if you push them down the stairs
