Stump positions
Where should the stump holes go? I've always put them just behind the back edge of the bowling crease. But now someone says they should on the FRONT edge. Can anyone help?

Stumps
As far as I know the stumps should break the line on the back edge.

It is the back edge of both the bowling and batting creases that is important. The stumps should be bisected by the back of the bowling crease. ie they are on the back of the line, not behind, not in front.

Stump positions
From 'Cricket Grounds' by R D C Evans, 'Extract from The Laws of Cricket 1980 Code':
Law 8 Wickets. Two sets of wickets.... shall be pitched... at a distance of 22 yards between the centre of the two middle stumps.
Law 9 The Bowling, Popping and Return Creases.
1. The Bowling Crease shall be marked in line with the stumps....
2. The Popping Crease, which is the back edge of the crease marking shall be in front of and parallel with the bowling crease. It shall have the back edge of the crease marking 4 feet from the centre of the stumps....
From this it seems reasonable to interprate that the back edge of the bowling crease marks the position of that crease.
Therefore the back edge of the two bowling creases should be 22 yards apart and the stumps should sit on the centre of that back edge. I've never been taught any other way.
Bear in mind also that the markings were originally a 'crease', or groove in the ground. Evan's book has an interesting few pages on the early days of cricket with special mention of any groundsmanship requirements.
