Just had one for the last two weeks. Good cricketer interested in learning more. Worked like a train every day including helping to move 80 tonnes of topsoil in barrows, a job I don't want to repeat for a while. Was a natural with the outfield mower and unusually did not get bored easily..

Just be carefull and make sure all paper work is completed and that risk assessments are completed for work experience kids . Ive given talks to school pupils on H and S and what to expect on work placements and you need everything in Place. Ian

Some years ago the local college wanted me to take a student on work experience, I agreed. Prior to the student coming they sent a H & S Inspector round. It ended up with him telling me that I shouldn't be using 99% of my equipment and that even the way I hung up hand tools in the shed was illegal. Because some were above head hight hard hats needed to be worn. He said he would come back in a few weeks to check all his advice had been implemented, I told him not to bother as I wouldn't be taking a student. Never saw him again.

We've had about 12 students so far this year, including one lad from a deaf school who despite the fact that he couldn't hear communicated very well. It always seems to be a positive experience for us and them and they are generally able to be useful. I'm all for it.

Mackay - that's really great that you have taken so many on... all power to you.

There are two sorts of placements, either through the devolved body who administer it for the school (paperwork nightmare, don't touch it) or a 'self placement' where the parents sign away the pupil to the placement by mutual agreement. Risk assessments etc are as per any other operative on site. Self placement is the only way I can go. I think this is the last year of work expeience for year 10 (4th year) pupils anyway, certainly in Lancashire. I think it's all come to a stop.

Our lad is a self placement. Like Tony in the past we have not been allowed to give the kids anything to do because of H & S. That seems to have changed this time as the boy can use all equipment as long as he is shown how.
Had bad experiences before but this lad has been very good so far (4 days) and has shown me a lot. Only problem is slowing him down as he wants to operate at full speed all the time.

Similar experience for me Vic, as well as asking too many intelligent questions, he ran to the tap and back with watering cans. It was like working with Bambi but we got a lot done.

We have taken on several over the years, but none for 2 or 3. Some have been really good and some down right awful and self placement is by far the most positive experiences for all involved.
The paperwork need not be too extensive, we carried out simple inductions based on our staff handbook which we top and tailed for temporary staff.
