Message Board - Golf: Seeder for Fescue/Browntop
1 Nov 2011 by keriboi Hawker
What are you guys using for seeding into existing stands of grass.
I am looking for a seeder to establish fescue in my existing rough and to seed tees with browntop.
Any suggestions?

A disc seeder will probably be your best option. I hired a Vrado Last and went in several directions..... got a great take.

If your tees are not suitable for a tractor mounted seeder, why not punch loads of shallow holes with a solid tine aerator, drop seed and top-dress..... That's what I would do!

Any type of slice seeder for roughs (I've a big heavy one to break into the soil)
I prefer dimple type seeders for bentgrass like the Redixim Speedseed although their Vertiseed slice seeder is very nice on fine turf also as it's not aggressive

We have a charterhouse vertiseed which is excellent for the delivery of bentgrass and by changing the cog system (all supplied with the machine) you can use it to very your rates per square metre. Several firms hire them out.

Ken, I do tees like that now, but I though if I was going to get a seeder to do fairways/roughs it might as well do tees as well.
Don't think I can hire a seeder from anywhere in NZ. Getting a contractor in is expensive and they can only do it at certain times.
Alan, the dimple seeders look good. I like the look of the blec multiseeder.
Paul, the vertiseed looks very good as well, but im sure it comes at the redexim price ?

I know what your saying about getting a machine to do both jobs. But tractor mounted seeders are not the easiest to used on raised tees.
The benefits of a disc seeder are that most can easily be se-upt to apply rye, fescue or bent seed. They get excellent seed to soil contact and they are fast to operate. Length of grass will not effect finish of work, so overseeding roughs is just as quick as fairways or greens.
I don't know if you are aware there has been another post put up regarding the location of a seeder or seeders in N.Z.

Not sure how well a dimple seeder will work in the rough. I have a Blec Multiseeder and it's a great machine, but I reckon you'd be best with a disc seeder.
As Ken said - Richard Campey left a post elsewhere - I think he meant to post on this thread. He's a good guy - contact him on:

The past few years we have had our contractor dimple seed our ryegrass fairways then follow with with a disc seeder. Works great but very expensive.
Still I will do cost benefit over owning or hiring a contractor.
Here is Richards Post below
"If you are in NZ please mail me as I have a contact over there who may be able to help you with a seeder.
