Weather stations

I'm considering having a weather station installed, so that I can more accurately determine my irrigation needs. Has anyone had a weather station installed at their facility, and have you benefitted from it, in terms of conserving water use?

What are the pitfalls, does anyone have any experiences they would like to voice (about weather stations that is). Will I need more than one, as the site is quite large.

These questions and more.

Thanks for any replies that may come my way.

Weather Stations

Colin

I\'ve been thinking about installing some sort of monitoring system. Weren\'t they once called \"Stevenson\'s Screens\" or is that something else?
Just to know how much rain had fallen and maybe a min/max thermometer would be a good start.Trouble is how long would it last before it got vandalised? Let us know how you get on.

Weather stations

Hi Colin,

My View is they can be very useful tools in the right environment, but, they would need to be linked to a computer programme / automatic irrigation to get the full benefit, or you may find you have too much information to decipher.
What exactly are you trying to get out of a weather station? if it is as Pete says and just general info, you can get this sort of information of the Internet, or you can get hand held stations / thermometres that give more than enough info for most groundsmen.
The School i work for has a weather station, which is linked via a computer network, which i find very useful for monitoring rainfall, temperature etc, it will even tell me how much rain fell at the corresponding time the year before, BUT, it still does not tell me when to Water, or cut, Or fertilise etc.

Hope this has given you something to go on.

Weather stations

The school I work for HAD a working electronic weather station. Unfortunately the wires for it, unbeknown to the person who maintains the gardens, were hidden behind a Wisteria. Therefore when I (I mean the gardener!) was pruning the Wisteria ......!
