verti draining
have just been talking to someone who owns a drainage company, they also sand slit and verti drain. they have offered to verti drain our cricket square for nothing.is this a good idea?when is the best time to do this?

vertidraining
simon, don`t undertake any deep aeration after january on the square.I f you do you will run the risk of the square cracking once the warmer weather arrives.I personaly dont like deep vertidraining on the square, much prefering regular aeration(6)every third week throughout the winter period, but all deep aeration cease in january for thr reasons explained.

Spiking squares now
Verti-draining 'problem' squares has proven to be successful in the past for improving root growth (therefore better pace and bounce) and improving infiltration rates.
Under no circumstances, however must you ever verti-drain any square at this time of year! As stated by Anthony you will cause yourself some serious cracking, making each wicket inconsistant and very possibly dangerous to play on.
Spiking should commence as soon as possible after the playing season up until christmas, but afterwards only very light aeration should take place such as sarrel rolling, to keep the surface open and offset the adverse effects of pre season rolling on the surface.
If there is a problem with pace and bounce on your square and the profile is not badly layered then verti-draining straight after the season will produce better results for you the following season. After such harsh treatment you have to give the square the maximum time to recover, or you'll suffer the consequences.
Happy new year!
