Could someone please tell me the purpose of the white line markings outside of the pitch at each goal end?

I be lieve it is a line which photographers cannot cross if they are situated on the grass surface, not many still use them but I have seen them at Crewe and Southampton this year.

You may be correct Bert but I do know that sometimes these marks are put down for the teams to use at warm ups. This saves wear on the goal line

Despite what earlier replies say, these short lines outside the pitch are in fact there to guide the match officials at corner kicks. The players have to be ten yards from the ball, so ,as the ball can be placed one yard from the flag, these little lines are placed eleven yards from it, and ten yards from the quarter -circle. As they are only courtesy lines and not stipulated in the Laws of the Game, they should not be in contact with the touchlines or the goal-lines. It is very rare not to see them at professional grounds.Cheers!
